When is the start date for an online programme?

Will I be required to travel?

Travel is not required for the majority of our online programmes as you can complete the degree entirely online.

Some of the online programmes offered by the School of Education may require students to attend study evenings/weekends in Glasgow so please refer to individual programme pages.

How long does it take to complete an online programme?

The length of the programme depends on what you are studying so please refer to individual programme pages for details.

What are the technical requirements?

All you need to participate in our online programmes is a computer and internet access. You do not have to have experience of studying online as you will be guided through how to access and use all of our online resources. 

Broadband internet connection: 3 mbps or higher

Our online learning platform, Moodle, is compatible with any standards-compliant desktop or mobile web browser. This includes:

  • Chrome
  • Firefox
  • Safari
  • Edge
  • MobileSafari

For the best experience and optimum security, we recommend that you keep your browser up to date.

JavaScript needs to be enabled within your browser.

Please note that legacy browsers with known compatibility issues with Moodle 3.3 are:

Will employers recognise an online programme?

Absolutely. Our online programmes offer the same high teaching and assessment standards as their campus-based equivalents.

They also lead to the same qualifications as an on-campus programme, awarded by the University of Glasgow.

What are the fees for an online programme?

The fees you pay will depend on the programme you are studying. Details of our fees can be found on individual programme pages. You may also visit our tuition fees page for more information.

How do I pay for my course? Can I pay in instalments?

You will be asked to pay your fees when you register online using MyCampus. You will need to either pay your fees in full or agree to pay by the approved instalment plan before you can be registered as a student.

Is the University of Glasgow the awarding body for the online postgraduate programmes?

Yes, the University of Glasgow is the awarding body for all our online postgraduate programmes.

Is an online degree as good as a campus degree?

Yes, the degree you are awarded is the same degree that you would get for the equivalent study on-campus. It is subject to the same academic scrutiny and quality control.

Will my degree certificate indicate that my degree was completed online?

No, your degree certificate will look the same as the degree certificates received by those who have completed their study on campus.

Can I graduate on campus in Glasgow?

Yes. Our online students are invited to campus for graduation ceremonies along with our on-campus students. Attendance is not mandatory.

How do I access the reading list without visiting the library?

The reading list is available online.

What are the benefits of studying online?

Our part-time online courses are designed to fit in with your lifestyle. They are ideal if you're working full-time or have family commitments. You can study wherever you live, at a time and pace that suits you.

How do you network during an online course?

Our online learning environment includes tools to help you network, such as group chat rooms and private asynchronous discussion forums. You may also undertake group assessments in some of your courses. Students also communicate via student-led chat groups using social media.

What is multidisciplinary learning?

This is when the same topic or subject is studied from the viewpoint of more than one discipline to give you a broader all-round knowledge.

Can I study and work at the same time?

Yes. Our online courses are ideal if you're working full-time or have family commitments. You can study at a time and pace that suits you.

 

How many study hours a week are recommended?

We recommend around 20 hours (part time).

Will I need to attend a graduation ceremony on campus?

It's up to you. You can attend an on-campus graduation ceremony or you can take part in a virtual graduation ceremony with our bot, 'Gradley'.

Do I need to take an English language test?

Other than an IELTs certificate, what other equivalent qualifications are accepted?

What if my English language qualifications are below the requirements?

The University's English for Academic Study Unit offers a range of campus-based Pre-Sessional Courses to bring you up to entry level. These are accredited by BALEAP, the UK professional association for academic English teaching.

If my previous degree was undertaken in English, will I still need an English language certificate?

We do accept an academic qualification equivalent to a UK degree completed in the UK or a UKVI approved 'majority English-speaking country' within the last 5 years.

Are there any guidance notes to help me complete my online application?

The notes below are intended to help you complete the online application form accurately. These guidance notes are also available within the help section of the online application form.

If you experience any difficulties accessing the online application, you should visit the Application Troubleshooting/FAQs page.

Name and date of birth: Details must appear exactly as they do on your passport. Please take time to check the spelling and layout.

Contact details: Correspondence address. All contact relevant to your application will be sent to this address, including the offer letter(s). If your address changes, please contact us as soon as possible.

Choice of course: Please select carefully the course you want to study. As your application will be sent to the admissions committee for each course you select, it is important to consider why you are interested in the course. This needs to be reflected in your application.

Proposed date of entry: Please state your preferred start date including the month and year. Taught online masters degrees tend to begin in September, January or April.

Education and qualifications: Please complete this section as fully as possible indicating any relevant higher education qualifications, starting with the most recent. Complete the name of the institution as it appears on the degree certificate or transcript.

English language proficiency: Please state the date of any English language test taken (or to be taken) and the award date (or expected award date if known).

Employment and experience: Please complete this section as fully as possible with all positions of employment relevant to your course. Additional details may be attached in your personal statement/proposal where appropriate.

Reference: Please provide one reference. This should typically be an academic reference but in cases where this is not possible, a reference from a current employer may be accepted instead. For certain programmes we may also accept an employer reference. If you already have a copy of a reference on letter headed paper then please upload this to your application. If you do not already have a reference to upload, please enter your referee's name and contact details on the online application and we will contact your referee directly.

How can students contact academics?

You will be able to contact your programme director via email, or you can use the virtual learning environment to message them with any questions relating to the programme content.
