Biography

Marcos Freire de Andrade Neves is LKAS Research Fellow at the School of Social and Political Sciences at the University of Glasgow. He is Principal Investigator of the ERC-funded project MORTALMED: The Social Life of a Death-Inducing Pharmaceutical, which examines the global circulation of sodium pentobarbital across contexts of assisted dying and state executions, and the forms of sociality and value that emerge around it.

From 2023 to 2025, he served as Co-Speaker of the Medical Anthropology Working Group of the German Association of Social and Cultural Anthropology (DGSKA). Previously, Marcos was a DAAD PRIME Postdoctoral Fellow at the University of Edinburgh and Freie Universität Berlin (2022–2023). His recent projects include the documentary Not Dead Yet, on transnational assisted dying, supported by the Wenner-Gren Foundation’s Fejos Postdoctoral Fellowship in Ethnographic Film (2025), and a DFG-funded project (2024) on the use of sodium pentobarbital in lethal injection protocols in the United States. Marcos was also a member of the DFG-funded Public Anthropology Research Network and the Cross-Party Group on End-of-Life Choices in the Scottish Parliament.

Research interests

His work explores the intersections of necrosocialities, pharmaceutical governance, and end-of-life practices, with a focus on transnational assisted dying, the death penalty, and the socio-political implications of life-ending pharmaceuticals such as sodium pentobarbital.
