The ratings from the Research Assessment Exercise 2008 (RAE) show that the Department of Sociology has a thriving and growing research culture and confirms our position as one of the leading sociology departments in Scotland.

  • 75% of our research output has been rated as being of international quality.
  • 10% of our output has been rated 4* (the highest category) denoting research that is world-leading.
  • A further 30% of our submission has been graded as being internationally excellent.
  • Taking the total number of category A staff within the 4* and 3* rating, Sociology at GU has moved up to 17th nationally, 2nd in Scotland and 7th in the Russell Group.
