Head of School announced as new Fellow of the Royal Society of Edinburgh (RSE)

Professor Michele Burman joins leading figures from academia, public service, business, and the arts to join Scotland's National Academy
Our Head of School, Professor Michele Burman, has been elected as a new Fellow for the Royal Society of Edinburgh (RSE). Michele, along with the other newly-appointed Fellows, will work with the RSE to provide independent and expert advice to policymakers, support aspiring entrepreneurs, develop research capacity and leadership, inspire and facilitate learning, and engage with the general public through inspiring events.
The RSE has described Professor Burman as a 'leading criminologist in Scotland. Her research on young women and violence, and on criminal justice responses to rape, has had a significant impact on policy, legislation, and police and judicial training.'
Speaking on her appointment, Professor Burman said, 'I am so pleased and proud to become a Fellow and look forward to engaging in the work of the RSE.'
Commenting on the new Fellows, current President of the RSE, Professor Jocelyn Bell Burnell DBE, said, 'Each year we welcome a selection of nominated extraordinary individuals into the Fellowship and this year is no exception. The diverse range of achievements of these individuals will be an asset to the RSE and I am sure they will strengthen the RSE’s standing as a national academy committed to providing public benefit to Scottish society.'
The RSE is an educational charity, registered in Scotland, which operates on a wholly independent and non-party-political basis, and provides public benefit throughout Scotland. Their aim is to play a leading role in the development of a modern enlightenment that will enable Scotland to contribute significantly to addressing the global challenges currently facing us all.
