SPS academics help Colombia's communities fight back against illegal mining

Our staff are helping some of Colombia's most desperate residents fight back against illegal loggers and armed paramilitaries and help protect a river which has its own rights.

The Rio Atrato, in Choco Department, is one of the world's richest for biodiversity and natural resources, which means it attracts illegal loggers searching for gold. But the people who live there are among Colombia's poorest, are denied property rights and frequently forcibly displaced by the armed militias whose activities mostly go unchecked.

The School's Dr Mo Hume, plus researchers and colleagues from across the University, are trying to help.
