Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages (TESOL) for students of SMLC

This 20-credit course covers the core principles of Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages (TESOL) methodology, with a focus on teaching approaches for the four skills (listening, speaking, reading and writing) and the language system at sentence and discourse level. It complements the linguistic knowledge and language year-abroad experience of students taking degrees in modern foreign languages.

It gives students practice for planning lessons, and teaching with a variety of material and employing a variety of teaching techniques. The course also raises awareness of contemporary issues in the TESOL field.

Culture & English Language teaching for students of English Language

This 20-credit course is a student-led, experiential course focusing on key concepts in the teaching of English language and culture to speakers of other languages. Topics normally include: intercultural communicative competence, political issues in ELT, ethnography in the classroom, and approaches to the development of language learners’ receptive and productive skills.

Requirements of Entry

Open to senior honours students of English Language (within the School of Critical Studies)
