Professor Lal Madathil appointed as Visiting Professor at Glasgow Dental School

We are delighted to announce that Professor Lal Madathil, Professor of Oral Pathology at Kerala University of Health Sciences and Consultant in Oral Health at Mangalore Institute of Oncology, has been appointed a Visiting Professor at the University of Glasgow Dental School.

We are delighted to announce that Professor Lal Madathil, Professor of Oral Pathology at Kerala University of Health Sciences and Consultant in Oral Health at Mangalore Institute of Oncology, has been appointed a Visiting Professor at the University of Glasgow Dental School.

Prof Madathilgraduated from Mangalore University in 1992 (Bachelor of Dentistry). After a series of junior clinical posts he was selected for a master’s programme by research in Oral Pathology & Microbiology at the Government Dental College, Kerala University. He came to the United Kingdom in 1998 under the Permit Free Training Scheme and underwent clinical training at Worcester Royal Infirmary, Hereford Hospitals NHS Trust and Russells Hall Hospitals, Dudley, rotating with Wolverhampton. He passed the FDSRCS examinations of RCS England in 2000. In 2002 he enrolled as a postgraduate student at the Eastman Dental Institute, UCL and gained an MSc in Implant Dentistry.

In October 2003, Prof Madathil returned to India, where he was appointed Associate Professor in Oral Pathology & Microbiology at ABSM Institute of Dental Sciences, affiliated to Rajiv Gandhi University of Health Sciences. In 2010 he joined the newly constituted Kerala University of Health Sciences in Kerala, where he is now Professor of Oral Pathology. In addition he holds the post of Consultant in Oral Health at a tertiary level cancer specialty hospital, Mangalore Institute of Oncology, Mangalore, where he participates in community outreach programmes, cancer education and anti-tobacco initiatives.

Prof Madathil has had a close association with Royal College of Physicians & Surgeons of Glasgow since 2010. In 2013 he became an International Adviser of the Faculty of Dentistry at the RCPSG and is actively involved in establishing overseas training and examination centres in India and abroad, together with other RCPSG-initiated international dental educational activities. He was awarded FDSRCSEd in 2013 and is now an International examiner for the MFDS examinations of RCSEd.

Currently Prof Madathil is enrolled on a Masters programme in Health Professions Education at Maastricht University. He holds memberships of the Academy of Medical Educators (UK), the Centre for Centre for Health Education Scholarship, University of British Columbia, Canada, and the Institute of Biology UK.
