Abstract

We analyze the stretching of bead–spring polymer chains in Navier–Stokes turbulence at a Weissenberg number of Wi = 80. By accounting for the feedback of the polymers on the flow, we characterize the geometry of flow–chain interactions and examine the underlying physics of turbulent quantities along polymer trajectories. Our results show that polymer stretching is correlated with regions of high strain, while relaxation predominantly occurs in regions of high enstrophy. The computation of two positive Lyapunov exponents demonstrates that polymer stretching in this regime constitutes a hyperchaotic dynamical system.
