Abstract

Atherosclerosis is the first cause of death in the world. Most of
ischaemic stroke and heart attack are due to the rupture of
atherosclerotic plaques. Current validated risk assessment criterion,
degree of luminal stenosis, cannot be used to identify vulnerable
lesions. Increasing evidences have demonstrated that detailed lesion
morphological and compositional features and pathological burden are
more relevant with lesion vulnerability than luminal stenosis alone.
Moreover under physiological condition, plaque is subject to mechanical
loading due to dynamic blood pressure and flow and the rupture is likely
to occur if such loading exceeds its material strength. It is therefore
a need to integrate detailed lesion structure, pathology and critical
mechanical conditions for a refined patient risk stratification. This
talk to give an overview of recent advancement in plaque vulnerability
assessment and discuss the possible clinical workflow for the
translational application of this novel technique.
