GO Justice

The GO Justice Centre has partnered with the British Red Cross' VOICES network to co-produce 'Voices of Asylum Support in Scotland' - a three-part podcast series.

Since December 2025, Centre staff have trained up six students from the School of Law in the relevant asylum support law. The students then independently conducted research around refugee experiences in Scotland, drafted scripts for each episode, and developed their presenting skills to prepare for recording. They also met with the British Red Cross' VOICES Ambassadors to learn more about their lived experiences of seeking sanctuary.

The series is now available on the UofG School of Law Spotify page:

Episode 1 provides an overview of the legal process of seeking asylum, and the complexities and challenges experienced by those navigating it.

Episode 2 considers the misconceptions surrounding financial support available to those seeking sanctuary, summarising what financial support is available, the legal process of applying for it, and the extra support pregnang women and parents are entitled to

Episode 3 explores accommodation available for those in the asylum process, from hotels and dispersal housing, to larger sites. It also considers who is eligible, challenges of the system, and the UK's "no choice" allocation policy.

The VOICES Ambassadors project sits within our Clinical Legal Education Clinic, which is an extra-curricular opportunity open to Law students across the cohort, including those on the LLB Scots and Common Law programmes, those on the Accelerated two-year programme, and those in postgraduate study.

The British Red Cross VOICES Network is a collective of refugees and people seeking asylum who speak out about issues that affect them. We thank the British Red Cross, and especially the people who shared their stories of seeking sanctuary, for their time and dedication to this project.
