The Institute is proud to announce that our own Professor Rick Maizels is the recipient of the German Society for Parasitology (DGP)'s prestigious Rudolf Leuckart Medal for 2020.

Awarded to internationally renowned researchers who have distinguished themselves through significant work in the field of parasitology, Professor Maizels was selected for outstanding achievements in the field of parasite-host interaction.

The medal, an honour donated by Giessen zoologists in memory of the 'founder' of Parasitology Rudolf Leuckart and first presented in 1974, is accompanied by a certificate that states:

In recognition of his services to the challenge of Parasitology. Rick Maizels has had a decisive influence on Parasitology through outstanding research achievements in the field of parasite-host interaction. His research focuses on questions such as how parasites manipulate the immune system of their hosts, what influence this immune modulation has on other immunological diseases and which parasite molecules are responsible for this. Rick Maizels has made a decisive contribution to the formation of networks in parasitology.

Professor Maizels said: “I am most honoured by receiving this medal, and knowing the many excellent researchers in Parasitology in Germany, feel flattered that I would be selected for such a prestigious award.

"I also last week gave a lecture at the online congress of the German Society for Parasitology, in a very enjoyable session which I feel strengthened the links between our communities, and I look forward to working closely with colleagues in Germany in the months and years ahead.”
