The Wellcome Centre for Integrative Parasitology's Dr Lilach Sheiner, an expert in eukaryotic parasite cell biology who has been researching apicomplexan parasites for over 15 years, has been promoted to Reader.

Dr Sheiner's research team studies the parasites causing toxoplasmosis and malaria (Apicomplexa) and their 'power house' - mitochondrion, making some pioneering observations and generating new techniques to study this organelle.

Work performed by Lilach and her team over the past six years at WCIP has generated publications that are highly cited and led to a Wellcome Investigator Award early this year, which is recognised by this promotion.

Another factor was Dr Sheiner's contribution to a change in the research culture at the University through advocating for Early Career Researchers (ECRs) and organising a career support network.

Dr Sheiner said: "On top of a personal sense of achievement, and in addition to feeling grateful to the management at WCIP and iii for their encouragement, I'm thrilled to see this demonstration of support from the University for my team's research and an acknowledgement of its importance, its recent successes, and its potential to be world changing."
