Dr Sarah Walsh has been awarded a Wellcome Trust Early-Career Award to begin establishing her own independent research programme at the Centre for Virus Research (CVR).

These awards support researchers at a pivotal stage in their careers, helping them develop innovative ideas, build research independence and pursue ambitious projects that can deepen our understanding of health.

Dr Walsh's project will look at how genetic exchange between influenza A viruses affects viral evolution and emergence.

She will combine experimental virology, single-cell sequencing, and modelling to understand these processes, specifically how viral genetic background shapes which reassortant viruses are produced.

Dr Walsh said: "I'm very grateful to everyone who helped me put the application together, particularly Ed Hutchinson, and all of my colleagues and collaborators at the CVR, UKHSA, and APHA who helped shape the project. I'm very excited to get started."
