Professor Antonia Ho delivers her 2026 Fleming Prize lecture at the Microbiology Society Annual Conference in Belfast, speaking at a lectern on stage.

Centre for Virus Research (CVR) Professor of Infectious Diseases Antonia Ho recently delivered her 2026 Fleming Prize lecture, which is now available to view on YouTube.

Named for Sir Alexander Fleming, the award recognises outstanding contribution in the field of microbiology and infectious disease research, based on nominations received from across the membership.

The Microbiology Society announced Professor Ho as the winner of the prestigious award in November 2025 for her work in viral genomics, epidemiology and frontline patient care.

Professor Ho received the prize during the Microbiology Society Annual Conference in Belfast in April this year, where she delivered a lecture, titled: 'Unravelling Respiratory Viral Infections: from Bedside to Bench and Back'.

She said: "I am deeply honoured to be given this prize, and I am very grateful to the Microbiology Society, not only for the award but for putting a spotlight on a clinician scientist.

"In this talk, I discuss the use of clinical epidemiology, molecular virology, and immunology to understand the contribution and epidemiology of respiratory viral infections, investigate outbreaks, and evaluate the impact of preventative strategies, such as vaccination, in different settings.

"I demonstrate how knowledge derived from these integrative approaches is used to design and implement better diagnostic, management, preventative, and surveillance strategies for respiratory viral infections and emerging pathogens."
