Bacteriology Research Fellow Dr Liam Rooney has been awarded the prestigious Infection Sciences Award from the Microbiology Society (MS) in recognition of his research on cross-scale infection imaging.

Presented during the Infection Forum at the MS Annual Conference in April 2025, the award celebrates work that advances understanding of infection biology through innovative approaches.

As a result of the recognition, Dr Rooney has also been invited to give a talk at the Federation of Infection Sciences Conference in Bournemouth during December of this year.

He said: “I’m honoured to receive the Infection Sciences Award from the Microbiology Society; It’s extraordinary to be recognised amongst a list of infection biologists that I admire.

“Winning the award for an imaging-focused body of research also highlights the interdisciplinary nature of infection science, which I'm thankful to the Society for acknowledging, and hope that imaging remains a driver of the infection sciences field.

“Receiving this award just as I begin my fellowship in the School of Infection & Immunity at the University of Glasgow marks an exciting touchpoint as I start my independent research career.”

In addition to this award, Dr Rooney has been elected to serve on the council of the Royal Microscopical Society (RMS) for the 2025–2028 term.

Founded in 1839, the RMS promotes excellence in microscopy and imaging science through conferences, training, outreach, and publications – including the Journal of Microscopy, the world’s oldest journal dedicated to imaging.

The council is responsible for the society’s governance and strategic direction, and Dr Rooney’s election recognises his growing reputation and influence in the field.
