Biography

Petra’s research focuses on the drivers and consequences of, and effective policy responses to, deep-rooted health inequalities.

She is Director of SIPHER, a UKPRP-funded consortium (2019-2025, £5M with additional £1.7M funding from 18 partner organisations) that seeks to create a new interdisciplinary multi-methods framework for system science in public health research that can better deal with complexity by blending qualitative, data science, epidemiology and macro- and micro-level systems modelling approaches. Working in collaboration with policy and practice partners, its applied aim is to create an evidence base that can underpin Wellbeing Economy efforts by local, regional and national governments.

Petra is also Co-Principal Investigator of the £10.3M NERC-funded GALLANT (Glasgow as a Living Lab Accelerating Novel Transformation 2022-2027) which aims to deliver a Climate Resilient City through City-University Partnership. Petra’s work strand uses systems science to help the city move towards climate resilience whilst tackling health, social and economic inequalities. The work draws heavily on ideas from Doughnut Economics and Wellbeing Economy.

She is about to embark on a new programme of work is the £7.5M UKRI Population Cluster HealthMod (2024-2028) a multi-institution cluster of excellence for innovative public health computational modelling that provides timely and effective support to real-life policy processes. HealthMod will develop robust evidence on the potential health benefits or harms of economic policy choices, including their societal distribution, through advanced computational models of the economy-health nexus.

She joined University of Glasgow’s MRC/CSO Social and Public Health Sciences Unit as a Professor of Public Health in July 2020 and leads the Unit’s Systems Science in Public Health Programme and team. Prior to moving to Glasgow, Petra was Professor of Public Health at the University of Sheffield where she set up the Wellcome Doctoral Training Centre in Public Health Economics and Decision Science, winning funding for 55 PhD studentships, and founded the Sheffield Alcohol Research Group, one of the UK’s largest interdisciplinary alcohol policy research groups and known for policy appraisal and evaluation research, especially around minimum unit pricing, tax, and drinking guidelines.

Petra is a Fellow of the Academy of Social Sciences (FAcSS), a Senior Editor of Addiction and serves on the NIHR Public Health Research Funding Board. She sits on the Expert Advisory Group for Scotland’s National Outcomes Framework, Glasgow City Region’s Commission on Economic Growth and the UK Government Office of Health Improvement and Disparities’ Alcohol Advisory Board. She is an Associate Director of the Centre for Sustainable Solutions, and scientific advisor to the Institute for Alcohol Studies.
