ACE Centre - Undergraduate Psychiatry Teaching

return to home page

Professor Helen Minnis is lead for the undergraduate psychiatry curriculum at the University of Glasgow. With Drs Angela Cogan, Julie Langan-Martin and Ruchika Gajwani, she has conducted a major review of undergraduate psychiatry teaching over the last three years.  This revealed that there was a historically very little psychiatry or psychology teaching until 4th and 5th year, we have more than doubled the amount of psychology and psychiatry in the curriculum and this begins early in every medical student’s course, for example we now have most of a four week block in second year which follows a family inter-generationally through alcohol problems and ADHD. We have already had excellent feedback from these new elements in the curriculum and seem to be inspiring some students to consider psychiatry as a career.
