Find out more about our International Women’s Day 2020 event on the themes of recovery and growth after domestic abuse and the changing face of Saudi women

In order to mark International Women’s Day 2020, the University of Glasgow organised a week of events. As part of this, the Institute of Health and Wellbeing organised this two-part event entitled “To Them I Am a Superwoman”. The event reflected the theme of the week, which was Inspiring Women, and was well-attended, with 40 students and staff members in the audience.

The first part of the event was a discussion on recovery and growth following domestic abuse. The panel for this discussion was composed of Marion, Joanne, and Laura, all survivors of domestic abuse, and was moderated by Julien le Jeune d’Allegeershecque, currently a Teaching Assistant in the Institute.

Over the course of the 50-minute discussion, many topics relating to the post-abuse experiences of the panel members were covered.  The panel members talked about the challenges they faced in recovering from the abuse they suffered and in rebuilding their lives once they left their abusive relationships. The participants said that the lack of both material and financial resources which they faced once they had left their partner made it difficult for them to work on their recovery. Another challenge which the panel members discussed was the constant fear of the abusive partner reappearing and harming either themselves or their families.
