Wider inflammation and damage to the other organs such as the kidneys was also common.

Patient-reported outcomes relating to exercise capacity and quality of life showed marked impairment at discharge from hospital and remained reduced at the time of MRI.

The study was led by Prof Colin Berry (Institute of Cardiovascular and Medical Sciences), and was supported by the Robertson Centre for Biostatistics (Prof Peter Macfarlane, Prof Alex McConnachie, Dr Alasdair McIntosh, and Dr Sarah Weeden).
