Biography

I engineer biomaterials for in vitro modelling, regenerative medicine and mechanobiology. I was Professor of Applied Physics in Valencia (Spain) until 2013 where I pioneered novel materials that trigger protein organisation (Science Advances 2016). I was awarded an ERC Consolidator Grant in 2012 to engineer materials that promote growth factor binding and their use in regenerative medicine. I moved to Glasgow in 2013 and assembled a multidisciplinary group that has generated internationally leading outcomes and radical new concepts: the use of viscosity to control cell behaviour (PNAS 2018 & Nat Comms 2024); living biomaterials for stem cell engineering (Advanced Materials 2018); the low dose use of BMP-2 for bone regeneration (Advanced Science 2019); the relationship between cell mechanics and metabolism in cancer (Nature Metabolism 2020) and new materials that capture latent proteins (Advanced Materials 2024).  I am interested in developing the next generation of viscoelastic materials to incroporate this key property of the extracellular matrix into in vitro models and mechanobiology. 

I am Editor-in-Chief of Biomaterials Advances and sit on the editorial board of Biomaterials, Advanced Healthcare Materials, Biomedical Engineering Advances, Advanced NanoBiomed Res and Materials Today Bio.

 

Research interests

I work on engineering material-based strategies for tissue repair and regeneration, developing in vitro 3D models to understand physiology, disease and as platforms for drug testing, and in mechanobiology. My group is within the Centre for the Cellular Microenvironment, a cross-college multidisciplinary initiative that I co-founded with my colleague Matt Dalby. Together with key local and international collaborators, my group addresses a broad range of topics within this field, including the design of advanced biomaterials, including control of mechanical properties and functionalisation with growth factors, their interactions with the extracellular matrix and strategies that underpin stem cell engineering. I develop fundamental research that it is then pushed to clinical translation.
