Biography

I am Head of the Division of Biomedical Engineering and co-director of the Centre for the Cellular Microenvironment in Glasgow. Before joining the University of Glasgow in 2013, I was Full Professor of Applied Physics in Valencia. I have international experience (Visiting Professor in Georgia Tech in 2010 and Kyushu University in 2020). I was seconded to Abengoa Research – a research company within Abengoa, an international company with +20000 employees – to set up the materials research division.

I have > 180 publications in leading international journals that are underpinned by a number of national and international grants. I was the holder of  an ERC Consolidator grant and two ERC Proof of Concept grant (2015, 2017). I currently lead an EPSRC Programme Grant and a major programme of translational research funded by The Sir Bobby Charlton Foundation, a charity focused on helping civilians impacted by landmines. I am also coordinator of HealiKick, a EU Horizon 2020 grant that develops bone regeneration technologies to get them to clinical trial in five years.

I am editor-in-chief of Biomaterials Advances, an elsevier journal that publishes research at the interface between materials and biomedicine.

Research interests

I work on engineering material-based strategies for tissue repair and regeneration, and developing in vitro 3D models to understand physiology, disease and as platforms for drug testing. My group is within the Centre for the Cellular Microenvironment, a cross-college multidisciplinary initiative that I co-founded with my colleague Matt Dalby. Together with key local and international collaborators, my group addresses a broad range of topics within this field, including the design of advanced biomaterials, including control of mechanical properties and functionalisation with growth factors, their interactions with the extracellular matrix and strategies that underpin stem cell engineering. I develop fundamental research that it is then pushed to clinical translation.
