Biography

Dave Banks is a hydrogeologist and environmental geochemist with 35 years' experience from the water industry, geological survey, academia, humanitarian aid and consultancy sectors. He started his career as a practising field hydrogeologist with Thames Water and the Natural Rivers Authority, and then moved to Trondheim to take a post with the Geological Survey of Norway, eventually becoming section leader for hydrogeology and geochemistry. Since returning to the UK in 1998, Dave has been active as a consultant, founding his own company, Holymoor Consultancy Ltd. In recent years, Dave has become increasingly interested in the use of the ground and groundwater as a source and sink of heat. He was active during the blooming of the UK's ground source heat industry in the late 1990s and has contributed to laying the foundations of the science of "thermogeology" in the UK. He is also a member of the emergency preparedness roster of Norwegian Church Aid and has assisted in the planning, assessment and delivery of humaninarian aid in the WASH (water, sanitation and hygiene) sector since 1997. Dave's work has taken him to a range of international projects and he can claim experience from locations as varied as Svalbard, Somalia, Nepal, Iraq, Afghanistan, Bolivia and Huddersfield.

Dave has held a 20% post as a Senior Research Fellow at the University of Glasgow since 2012. He uses this post to carry out applied research into the thermal behaviour of the subsurface and how it can be manipulated as a source, sink or store of heat. In this context, he is especially interested in the potential of the UK's flooded coal mines.

Dave has published two widely used text books:

Research interests

My main research interests revolve around the interface between groundwater, thermal manipulation of the subsurface, heat pumps and abandoned mines. I am particularly interested in the use of groundwater chemistry and stable isotopes as tools for elucidating the behaviour of groundwater and thermal systems.

I have been involved in several national and international projects involving the use of geological energy while at Glasgow:

  • the LoCAL project, funded by the EU Research Fund for Coal and Steel, examining the potential of underground coal mines as sources of cooling and heating in Spain, the UK and Poland. I assisted in setting up and testing open and closed loop minewater thermal facilities at Caphouse mine, Yorkshire and monitoring a scheme at Markham mine, Derbyshire.
  • the EU Horizon 2020 reserach project DESTRESS, examining low impact means of stimulating deep geothermal reservoirs. In this context I have published on the chemistry of geothermal fluids from Pohang (Korea) and Klaipeda (Lithuania)
  • The EU SHEER project, aimed at managing the risks associated with exploitation of unconventional hydrocarbon resources. In particular, I contributed to work packages dealing with monitoring of ground- and surface water in the context of shale gas / shale oil operations.

At present, I am involved in  two EPSRC-funded domestic projects: (i) the NET-ZERO GEORDIE project, funded by EPSRC, aimed at demonstrating the integration of a deep geothermal single well with a district heating and cooling system, and (ii) the INTEGRATE project, examining subsurface thermal energy storage technologies. I am also providing hydrochemical advice to the NERC DEEPHEAT project, examining fault corrosion hypotheses in the context of deep geothermal.

Over the years, I have also developed good bilateral collaborations with the University Environment in Tomsk, Russia, especially Tomsk State University. Collaborations with geologists and microbiologists have led to the development of environmental atlases of Khakassia, baseline groundwater data for Tomsk oblast' and a series of publications on the microbiology of mine waters and the deep subsurface in Siberia.

Additional information

I am a Chartered Geologist, European Geologist and Fellow of the Geological Society. I was recently invited to take part in the development of the CIBSE CP3 Guidelines on Open loop groundwater source heat pumps. I am, for my sins, a songwriter and pen sensitive ballads about mine water; two of which are were performed at GeoPoetry 2020 (at which John Hegley headlined).
