Mr Akshay Bagde
- Research Assistant (Systems Power & Energy)
Biography
I am a Postdoctoral Researcher with the Supergen Bioenergy Hub and the James Watt School of Engineering at the University of Glasgow. My research focuses on hydrogen-BECCUS (Bioenergy with Carbon Capture, Utilisation and Storage), waste-to-hydrogen systems, sustainable thermochemical conversion technologies, and negative-emission energy systems.
I recently completed my PhD in Mechanical Engineering at the University of Glasgow, where my research investigated hydrogen production from waste gasification integrated with carbon capture technologies for low-carbon and carbon-negative energy generation. My work combined process simulation, lifecycle assessment (LCA), techno-economic analysis (TEA), and laboratory-scale experimental validation to develop sustainable hydrogen production pathways from municipal solid waste, biomass, and plastic waste feedstocks.
My current research explores advanced gasification systems, sorption-enhanced hydrogen production, carbon capture integration, and circular economy approaches for sustainable energy transitions. I work closely with industry, academic collaborators, and innovation networks across the UK hydrogen and bioenergy sectors. I also contribute to discussions surrounding Scottish bioenergy policy and DESNZ consultations related to hydrogen, carbon capture, and sustainable energy systems.
Alongside my academic research, I am actively involved in developing commercialisation and deep-tech spin-out opportunities in waste-to-energy and hydrogen technologies through my initiative, Waste Reset Technologies. My broader interests include sustainable fuels, BECCUS deployment, renewable energy systems, waste valorisation, and climate-positive engineering solutions for future energy and transportation systems.
I have also played an active leadership role within the UK research community through the Supergen Bioenergy Hub SHARE Early Career Researcher Network, where I organised collaborative events, workshops, industry engagement activities, and researcher development initiatives aimed at strengthening interdisciplinary collaboration within the UK bioenergy and hydrogen research landscape.
Research interests
My research interests focus on waste-to-energy systems, hydrogen production, renewable energy technologies, and sustainable thermochemical conversion processes for low-carbon and negative-emission energy generation. I am particularly interested in decarbonisation strategies, net zero carbon initiatives, carbon capture, utilisation and storage (CCUS), and circular economy approaches for sustainable energy systems. My work also includes anaerobic digestion, biochar production and utilisation applications, sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) production pathways, and renewable methanol development from waste and biomass feedstocks. In addition, I am interested in sustainable transportation, energy policy, and the role of public value in supporting the transition towards future sustainable energy systems.
