The Covid-19 pandemic has turned researchers’ eyes to the digital environments more than ever before. With restrictions of physical mobility in place, we have had to move teaching and research online, updating our skills and rethinking our research projects so we can continue to work under current circumstances.

While making researchers reflect on the nature of our projects, the pandemic has brought up a whole range of methodological questions and challenges as well: How should we explore our relationships with digital data and the online world? What are the limitations and affordances of new methodologies and what ethical considerations should researchers take into account as they look at the digitalisation of our lives? As part of the Digital Society and Economy Interdisciplinary Theme Group, Dr. Lavinia Hirsu together with colleagues from other departments are currently launching a new series of workshops under the banner, “Innovative Research Methodologies for a Digital Society (IRMDS)”. The workshops are open to postgraduate students, Early Career Researchers, as well as experienced researchers who want to learn about new digital methodologies or share their own experiences with the methods presented in the workshop.

The first workshop in the series will be led by Emma Seddon from the School of Education who will speak on 'The insights and limitations of analysing Twitter networks in mixed methods research’. If you would like to register for this workshop or the follow upcoming workshops, please register your interest at https://www.eventbrite.com/e/innovative-research-methodologies-for-a-digital-society-irmds-workshop1-tickets-129706005153 and follow the news about the activities of the Digital Society and Economy Group on Twitter @UofGSDC
