Lecturer Dr Clare Ramjan demonstrates outdoor learning and place-responsive pedagogy with student teachers.
Dr Clare Ramjan, Lecturer in Teacher Education, supports student teachers to explore outdoor learning and place-responsive pedagogy as part of their studies.
With her Education Society class, Dr Ramjan uses outdoor spaces on campus to encourage student teachers to notice and engage with their surroundings, and to reflect on how learning beyond the classroom can be meaningfully embedded in school practice. The approach emphasises outdoor spaces as an extension of the classroom, supporting interdisciplinary learning, literacy development and positive connections with the natural world.
This work sits within the Scottish policy context of Learning for Sustainability and reflects Dr Ramjan’s wider research and public engagement in outdoor learning. She has recently been involved in a collaborative study with the University of Stirling calling for greater support for outdoor learning across Scottish education. She has also provided commentary on the Residential Outdoor Education (Scotland) Bill, highlighting the importance of building teacher confidence alongside residential provision.
