Sixty-three dental academics, students, practitioners and other colleagues attended the first Scottish Oral Health Research Collaboration (SOHRC) Conference at the Stirling Highland Hotel on Wednesday 18th February 2015. Chief Dental Officer, Margie Taylor, opened and closed the event and Professor Paul Speight gave the keynote address. Prof Speight was an author of the original CDO-led review of oral health research in Scotland that led to the establishment of the SOHRC in 2012.

The three SOHRC research groups gave presentations about their work so far. The Public Health and Health Services Research Group described three areas of work: improving caries prevention for children in dental practice; caring for older people’s oral health; and the feasibility of exploring the epidemiology of oral HPV via patient recruitment in dental settings. Similarly, the Craniofacial Research Group outlined their work in the areas of: Cleft Care Scotland cross Scotland research synergies; novel 3D and 4D imaging; and links with public health research.

After a fine lunch that gave everyone a chance to network, we were the first to hear the results of the Priority Setting Exercise commissioned by the Dental Education Research Group. The top three priorities were: the role of assessments in identifying competence; ensuring that the undergraduate curriculum prepares for practice; and the promotion of teamwork within the dental team. The final presentation gave us information about the Scottish Dental Practice Based Research Network and how it interacts with the work of SOHRC.

Thanks to all our wonderful speakers, session Chairs and to everyone who came for making this an enjoyable and stimulating event. The speakers in the photograph are:
