As the clock strikes midnight and the world usher in the New Year, revellers around the world sing Auld Lang Syne, a song about about cherishing old friendships and memories.

Professor Kirsteen McCue joined BBC Radio 4 presenter Evan Davis on Hogmanay (31 December 2025) to explain the meaning behind one of Robert Burns's most loved pieces.

Professor McCue explained that while is widely considered the second most popular song globally after "Happy Birthday" due to its connection with New Year's Eve, many people remain confused by what the song's words mean.
