At the School of Chemistry, we are proud to build strong connections with industry, schools, and the wider public through research collaboration, teaching, and outreach.

Our work is deeply embedded within WestCHEM, the West of Scotland’s joint Chemistry Research School, which was founded in 2005 to unify research excellence from the University of Glasgow and University of Strathclyde. WestCHEM fosters interdisciplinary collaboration, shares world-class facilities, and hosts a Graduate School serving 200+ research students between the two institutions

Research engagement and industry partnerships

We drive real-world innovation through collaborative projects in partnership with industry leaders such as Unilever, GSK, Merck, Airbus, and the High Value Manufacturing Catapult. These collaborations take shape through applied research, consultancy, bespoke services (e.g. analytical and manufacturing support), and staff training to provide tangible benefits for both organisations and our students.

Public and schools outreach

We participate in city-wide events like the Glasgow Science Festival, supporting hands-on science experiences for schools and community groups across the region. We offer chemistry demonstration lectures, curriculum-linked workshops, and support for primary to secondary schools. Activities are tailored for different age groups, aiming to inspire the next generation of chemists and make chemistry accessible to diverse audiences,

The MacMillan Lecture

Each year we host the prestigious MacMillan Lecture, named in honour of our distinguished alumnus and former Principal, Sir Neil MacMillan. Delivered by leading researchers or industry figures, the lecture explores cutting-edge themes, from green chemistry and energy materials to pharmaceutical innovation. It attracts an audience of students, academics, industry partners, and members of the public. This flagship event exemplifies our commitment to bridging research, practice, and societal impact.

Social responsibility and inclusion

Guided by values of sustainability, citizenship, and equality, we aim to shape socially responsible scientists. Our outreach emphasises inclusive access and supports schools in underserved communities. We also engage with public science through partnerships that blend research with artistic and creative practice—bringing chemical science into new cultural spaces
