I am a Cultural Historian with interests spanning a wide range of topics: art, architecture, design, fashion, virtual art, pop culture, heritage, material culture, research development, academic literacies, and more. In 2025, I was elected a Fellow of the Royal Historical Society, which is a very cool achievement. I particularly enjoy talking to students about writing as a practice, and helping them to become better writers and researchers.

Things I do:

• I am known mostly as an expert in two related areas: 19th century British fashion (especially Artistic Dress), and Glasgow Style art-architecture-and-design (especially Margaret Macdonald Mackintosh and Charles Rennie Mackintosh).
• My monograph, 'The Mack: Charles Rennie Mackintosh and The Glasgow School of Art' (Yale University Press, 2024), won the Society of Architectural Historians GB Alice Davis Hitchcock Medallion for an 'outstanding contribution to the study or knowledge of architectural history'.
• Based on the above book research, I recently launched a podcast called Mack Memories, an oral history project to interview people who have a connection to the Mackintosh Building at The Glasgow School of Art. 
• I sit on the committee of the 19th Century Dress & Textiles Reframed Network.
• I am on the Buildings & Interiors Subgroup of the Charles Rennie Mackintosh Society; the Expert Panel for National Trust for Scotland's The Hill House conservation project; and am a consulting researcher for the NTS's 'Mackintosh Illuminated' project.
• Previously, I worked as a lecturer and researcher at The Glasgow School of Art; then I led the pilot phase of the Scotland Cluster of The British Academy Early Career Researcher Network here at UofG, and most recently was the Effective Learning Advisor of the College of Arts and Humanities in UofG SLD. 
• I am also an active public historian, as seen/heard on (for example) BBC radio, television, and STV programmes, and several podcasts including the National Trust for Scotland’s 'Love Scotland' podcast with Jackie Bird.

How did I get here?

Born and raised in the sweltering Art Deco metropolis of Miami, Florida, my love for architecture and design was cultivated from an early age. This was furthered during my undergraduate studies in the American Midwest at Indiana University, Bloomington, during which times I drove up to Chicago whenever possible. I spent ten years as a museum administrator and educator before returning to academia at the University of Oregon, then on to my grand adventure in Scotland, now my home. I also completed my Pasold-funded PhD thesis ‘Fashioning the Artist: Artistic Dress in Victorian Britain, 1848-1900’ (2012) here at University of Glasgow.
