Research interests
Research Interests
- British and American art c.1850-1920, especially the work of James McNeill Whistler (1834-1903) and his circle, including Beatrix Whistler, née Philip (1857-1896).
- History of the London art market, c.1780-1920.
- Women artists in 19th century Britain, with special interest in the life and work of Louise Jopling (1843-1933). Related professional networks.
- Exhibition culture and international artist/dealer networks
- 19th century criticism and the art press.
- 19th century printmaking and print culture in Britain and France (with a particular focus on the Hunterian collections).
- Interdisciplinary approaches to the analysis of 19th century materials and techniques.
Current Projects
- Curatorial consultant & Hunterian lead, James McNeill Whistler (major retrospective, Tate Britain and other international venues 2026-7).
- Hunterian lead and research contributor, Whistler's Finish (related technical art history project led by Tate and funded by The Lunder Foundation, USA.
- Related interdisciplinary studies (with J. Townsend) of key late Whistler portraits of the Birnie Philip family in the Hunterian collection.
- The British Art Market in the Long 19th Century (with G. Petri), Six-volume series of primary source materials accompanied by critical essays (Routledge, print and online).
- Louise Jopling (1843-1933) (catalogue raisonné and research archive).
