Composition Mentoring Course
We invite applications from secondary students (particularly students in S5 and S6) interested in developing music composition skills. The course will run between September 2017 – April 2018 and sessions will take place both at the University of Glasgow and City Halls, Candleriggs. You will be paired with a mentor who will be a senior undergraduate student, and over the course of the year you will receive tuition in score-based composition and guidance in composing a new piece.
The course has been designed by Dr. Jane Stanley, Senior Lecturer in Music at the University of Glasgow and will be operated in partnership with Youth Music Initiative in Glasgow. It is aimed to introduce a range of techniques in contemporary art music.
Participants during a workshop in 2016.
Meetings will take place after school hours on Fridays, approximately fortnightly between 4-6pm.
The programme will cover topics relating to contemporary techniques for notation, harmony, rhythm, form, orchestration, and score/parts preparation. Throughout the year we will provide live instrument demonstrations, feedback on homework, and experience with music analysis. Additionally, we will study a number of pieces by established composers from the 20th and 21st century (for example, works by James MacMillan, Claude Debussy, Olivier Messiaen, Ruth Crawford Seeger, Luciano Berio, Kaija Saariaho) as well as work by the participating mentors from the University of Glasgow.
This programme may be of particular benefit to those seeking to study music at university or conservatoire level.
We require students to possess a knowledge of music theory and notation (for example, a minimum of ABRSM Grade 4 Theory or equivalent), proficiency on their instrument, and a keen interest in music composition. Very importantly, we require a commitment to attending all sessions and completing homework throughout the year as well as the final project.
If you are interested in applying for this opportunity, please contact Dr. Jane Stanley at jane.stanley@glasgow.ac.uk.
The deadline for formal applications has been extended to 5pm, Friday 8 September 2017.
