Biography

Rachel is a clinician-scientist interested in ventricular arrhythmia mechanisms and the inherited cardiac conditions which cause sudden arrhythmic death. She trained in medicine at the University of Oxford, gaining a first-class degree in Physiological Sciences, and then at Guy’s and St. Thomas’. She moved to Glasgow in 2004 to undertake a PhD during which she trained in experimental electrophysiology with Professor Godfrey Smith. Rachel was appointed Clinical Lecturer after her PhD and has combined clinical and experimental research since then. She undertook a post-doctoral research fellowship at the University of California, Davis before securing a Wellcome Trust Intermediate Fellowship to establish her independent research lab.

Rachel is now a Professor of Cardiac Electrophysiology in the School of Cardiovascular and Metabolic Health at the University of Glasgow, and an Honorary Consultant Cardiologist in the West of Scotland Inherited Cardiac Conditions (WoSICC) Service. Her group’s research focuses on understanding the role of cellular behaviours in ventricular arrhythmia mechanisms in the whole heart, with the aim of identifying new therapeutic targets and better risk stratification tools for patients at risk of sudden arrhythmic death. Rachel’s clinical expertise is in the inherited arrhythmia syndromes, management of arrhythmias in cardiomyopathy and evaluation of patients and families affected by cardiac arrest and sudden arrhythmic death.

Research interests

Research Theme: Cardiac Diseases

My current research approach combines both clinical and laboratory-based research, which utilizes optical imaging techniques to record voltage signals from intact myocardium in order to investigate the mechanisms of ventricular arrhythmias and sudden death in heart failure.
