Dr Abraham Zhang

  • Senior Lecturer in Supply Chain Management and Technology (Management)

Biography

Dr Abraham Zhang is a Senior Lecturer in Supply Chain Management and Technology. Prior to joining the Adam Smith Business School in August 2023, he worked for reputable universities including the University of Stirling, University of Essex, AUT University, University of Waikato, and Nanyang Technological University. He obtained his PhD in Logistics and Supply Chain Management from the University of Hong Kong.


Before Dr Zhang moved into the academia, he was a production supervisor in Singapore and a Lean management consultant serving the Asia-Pacific region. His teaching and corporate training have been well regarded by students and clients, and he has received multiple nominations for outstanding teaching awards. His research and consulting works have led to over 50 publications in leading academic journals including Transportation Research Part B, Part D, and Part E, International Journal of Operations and Production Management, Omega, International Journal of Production Economics, International Journal of Production Research, Supply Chain Management: An International Journal, Production Planning & Control, Business Strategy and the Environment, Journal of Cleaner Production, etc.

Dr Zhang is an Associate Editor of Business Strategy and the Environment and an Area Editor of Operations Management Research. He is also on the Editorial Board of Transportation Research Part E. Recently, he served as the managing guest editor of Transportation Research Part E Special Issue on “Logistics and Supply Chain Management in an Era of Circular Economy" (https://doi.org/10.1016/j.tre.2022.102911). He was also the Lead Guest Editor of International Journal of Logistics Management Special Issue on “Empirically grounded research in logistics and supply chain management for a circular economy" (https://www.emerald.com/insight/publication/issn/0957-4093/vol/34/iss/3).


Dr Zhang’s expertise on circular economy and sustainability has been internationally recognised, especially in the areas of circular supply chain and barriers to sustainability. He was among the first who conceptualised circular supply chain management, i.e., the integration of circular thinking in supply chain management (https://doi.org/10.1016/j.jclepro.2019.04.303). He is a critical step leader of a transdisciplinary research team working on “Āmiomio Aotearoa – A circular economy for the wellbeing of New Zealand”. The project won the 2020 Endeavour Fund (NZD$10,939,795 for 2020-2025) from the Ministry of Business, Innovation & Employment of New Zealand.


His current research focuses on sustainable operations and supply chain management, especially on circular supply chain management and Blockchain enabled supply chain sustainability. He also has a keen interest in the operations management of non-profit organisations including faith communities, social enterprises, eco-villages, and educational institutions. He has supervised to completion four PhD students and more Master's students.
