Hits From The Bong: rhythmic interaction in rural sound-making
Wednesday, 30 April 2026. 12:00-14:30
Room 141 A, Adam Smith Business School

Abstract

In this seminar, Robin will present preliminary findings from an ethnography of sound-marking practices in rural South West England. In the context of competitive church bell ringing, the study explains how group interactions are shaped by rhythmic intermediaries that span a variety of temporal and spatial scales. The study has implications for theories of embodiment, organizational heritage, and craft practices.
