GreenSpace Maintenance Session
Monday 16 March – 1.30pm -3.00pm
In collaboration with Woodlands Community Trust
Woodlands Community Garden opened in 2010, occupying a vacant site in West Princes Street. Since then it has become an important local space where people make new friends and feel part of the community. It’s also a great place to unwind from the everyday stresses and strains of city life. Each year, around 50 households grow their own fruit, vegetables and herbs in the garden’s raised beds. The garden is also the focus of many projects that are run with local partners.
The Adam Smith Business School is collaborating with the Woodlands Community Trust to lend a hand over our Sustainability Week. Our aim is to engage our university community to take pride in the beautiful spaces that we have on our doorstep, and to encourage community involvement with local charities.
This session will involve assisting volunteers with greenspace maintenance at Millennium Park. This group activity will include:
- weeding planters
- tidying and clearing paths
- tidying play surfaces
- general litter picking
No prior gardening experience is required, and required equipment will be provided.

Spring Nature Walk
Wednesday 18 March – 10am-1.30pm
In collaboration with Friends of the River Kelvin and GALLANT
Friends of the River Kelvin (FORK) have partnered with GALLANT at the University of Glasgow for this Spring nature walk, spotting and recording nature along the River Kelvin using the CommuniMap app.
CommuniMap is an innovative new community science app developed through the GALLANT project at the University of Glasgow. communiMap invites you to see your local area through fresh eyes – tuning in to nature, movement, and the everyday rhythms that shape where you live and work. Your observations help shape a collective story of local life by adding what you spot to the app.
This gentle walk offers a wonderful opportunity to connect with nature, learn about local wildlife, and enjoy the changing seasons by the riverside. We'll share stories and invite you to share your personal experiences in nature. Tell us about your connection to these green spaces and what makes them special to you.
As we walk from the Adam Smith Business School along the River Kelvin we’ll keep an eye out for a variety of bird species that call the river corridor home. With a bit of luck, we may even catch a glimpse of the striking kingfisher flashing along the water’s edge. We'll also be looking out for the signs of Spring and observing the changes that the season brings by looking at trees and plant life.
You will need:
- Charged smartphone
- Comfortable walking shoes
- Weather-appropriate clothing
