Biography

Dan completed his undergraduate degree at the University of Southampton (UK) in Biology and Oceanography, and then a PhD on the stability and complexity of model food webs at the University of Texas (Austin) with Eric Pianka, before undertaking a series of post-docs at Oxford, UBC, Edinburgh and Guelph (Ontario).  He moved to Glasgow in 2004.  From 2010-2022 he was Director of the Institute of Biodiversity, Animal Health and Comparative Medicine prior to its merger with the School of Veterinary Medicine to form the new School of Biodiversity, One Health and Veterinary Medicine.

Research interests

Dan maintains wide-ranging interests in quantitative aspects of ecology and epidemiology.

Ecologically, he retains general interest in community structure and function, and specific interests around models of community interactions (for example food webs and competitive networks), and determinants of their stability (and specifically permenance).  He is interested in spatial population models, patch occupancy models, and processes that result in spatially synchronized (or asynchronized populations); animal movement models; population viability analyses; and processes that lead to unpredictability (indeterminancy) in community dynamics.  He has a soft spot for the ecology of lichens.

Epidemiologically, he is interested in infectious diseases of wildlife and livestock, zoonotic diseases, and those with complex multi-host reservoir dynamics.  He is interested in how to use pathogen genome data to parameterize epidemiological models, and specifically how to use genome data from partially sampled outbreaks of disease to predict the total outbreak size, and seroprevalence data in more innovative ways.

Dan works with the Wellcome Trust funded program Afrique One which aims to strengthen One Health research capacity in sub-Saharan Africa.

He is convenor of the Schools Fellowship Committee (contact him if you have any questions about applying for fellowships to come to Glasgow!), and a lead on the College Futures theme in Planetary Health.

With his colleague Darren Shaw at the University of Edinburgh, Dan has collated and expanded notes from his course on General and Generalized Linear Models into an e-book.  It is deliberately written for people who find this subject difficult and confusing:

A pragmatist’s guide to General & Generalised Linear (Mixed) Models & Inference
