Professor Christopher Loughrey has been appointed as the new Head of the School of Biodiversity, One Health & Veterinary Medicine.

We are delighted to announce that Professor Christopher Loughrey has been appointed as the new Head of the School of Biodiversity, One Health & Veterinary Medicine.  Professor Loughrey will succeed Professor Ewan Cameron who is stepping down as Head of School after twelve years.

Professor Loughrey is a qualified veterinary surgeon and a UK and international leader in the field of experimental cardiology.  He leads translational research focused on understanding the mechanisms of cardiac disease and in particular, in identifying new therapeutic targets to prevent people developing heart failure.

He holds a prestigious British Heart Foundation programme grant and is a member of the British Heart Foundation Project Grants Committee, Deputy Executive Editor for Cardiovascular Research and a past member of the Editorial board of the British Journal of Pharmacology.  He is a Fellow of the Royal Society of Biology and an Honorary Professor at the University of Sydney.

Professor Loughrey has served as Deputy Head of the School of Biodiversity, One Health & Veterinary Medicine since 2020, and as College International co-Dean since 2018.  He takes up his new role from 1 August 2023.  Following his appointment he said:

It is an honour and privilege to serve as the next Head of School of Biodiversity, One Health and Veterinary Medicine at the University of Glasgow. I am tremendously excited by the opportunity to bring together the wealth of talent from across the School to ensure that our international powerhouse for One Health research continues to address global challenges and that we excel at educating the next generation of biologists and veterinary surgeons. I look forward to working closely with colleagues, students and external partners to build on this strong platform for our future success.

In announcing the appointment Professor Iain McInnes CBE, Vice Principal and Head of College of Medical, Veterinary & Life Sciences, said:

I am delighted that Professor Loughrey has been appointed as our new Head of School of Biodiversity, One Health & Veterinary Medicine. Christopher is a superb example of Glasgow’s commitment to nurturing the very best talent and being a place where committed world-changers can flourish . I look forward to working with Christopher in his new capacity and am excited to watch the School continue to thrive and develop under his leadership.

I would also like to take this opportunity to thank Ewan for his outstanding leadership of SBOHVM over his three consecutive terms. The School has continually been at the forefront of teaching and research excellence and by most measures, ranks among the best in the field internationally. This is, in no small part, down to the outstanding leadership exhibited by Ewan over so many years. His commitment and passion for doing the very best for our colleagues, students and patients of the School have been unwavering, and for this we are grateful to him.”
