Studentship: Deindustrialisation and Working-class Expression
Studentship: Deindustrialisation and Working-class Expression
In association with the DéPOT international partnership project, the College of Arts and Humanities at the University of Glasgow is pleased to offer a 3-year PhD studentship (at UK fee rate) to support research that offers a transnational perspective on working-class cultural expression and deindustrialization. The project will be supervised by Dr Jackie Clarke, based in the School of Modern Languages and Cultures, with co-supervision available across a wide range of fields in the School/College. The School is also home to the Centre for Comparative Literature and Translation Studies and the Stirling Maxwell Centre for Text-Image Cultures.
About DéPOT
DéPOT (Deindustrialization and the Politics of our Time) is a large-scale project funded by the Canadian Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council (SSHRC) and led by Professor Steven High at Concordia University, Montreal. The project now has over 100 affiliated researchers and partners, including an active graduate student and postdoc network which organises an annual Summer Institute. The studentship will form part of the DéPOT Working-Class Expression initiative, co-convened by Dr Jackie Clarke and Professor Sherry Lee Linkon, Georgetown University). The initiative aims to transnationalize our understanding of the ‘half-life of deindustrialization’ (Linkon, 2018) through an exploration of working-class cultural production. As a DéPOT affiliate the successful candidate will be eligible to apply for funds to support participation in project events.
The PhD project
Applicants are invited to propose a project that aligns with the overall intellectual aims of DéPOT and the Working-Class Expression initiative. We particularly welcome proposals that compare working-class writing or other genres of cultural production across different languages and/or cultures or investigate the translation or circulation of such texts or artefacts. Interdisciplinary proposals are encouraged.
Applicant profile
Applicants should have a good undergraduate degree and have completed a Master’s degree in a relevant discipline or equivalent professional experience.
