Building a Centre of Excellence
The University of Glasgow, along with substantial support from its partners and fundraisers, has invested heavily in building new state-of-the-art research facilities. We are deeply grateful to our local community and fundraisers, who offer us such fantastic support.
Beatson Institute for Cancer Research
The Cancer Research UK supported Beatson Institute for Cancer Research, located at Glasgow University's Garscube Estate in Bearsden, opened in 2008. This £15M award-winning building comprises four floors of accommodation including research laboratories and support rooms on two main floors, a microscopy suite, lecture theatre, café, administrative offices and a boardroom. The centre houses 240 cancer researchers research scientists and clinicians in world-class research facilities, accelerating the process of understanding the disease, identifying new therapies and bringing them to patients.
Paul O'Gorman Leukaemia Research Centre
The Leukaemia ResearchCentre, located at the site of Gartnavel General Hospital close to the University of Glasgow and the Beatson Institute, opened in 2008. The key benefits of this centre derive from the proximity of clinical and laboratory disciplines with all components incorporated into a single site. Integration of the NHS and Blood Transfusion Centre offer improved access to blood and bone marrow samples from normal donors and from patients with the full range of blood cancers. The centre is state of the art incorporating the latest research technologies and attracts international leaders in leukaemia research who translate laboratory findings into new medicines for patients. The Centre also benefits from close interactions with the Beatson Institute for Cancer Research and clinical departments of the Beatson West of Scotland Cancer Centre.
The centre was built after a fundraising drive by the University of Glasgow in collaboration with Leukaemia & Lymphoma Research (LLR), which saw more than £2.6million raised in six years, through the commitment and generosity of more than 1800 donors and supporters. Wolfson Wohl Translational Cancer Research Centre
This centre, located adjacent to the Beatson Institute for Cancer Research, is the newest phase in the University's delivery of a national centre of excellence in the fight against Cancer. This world-class translational research facility houses 180 scientists who work to transform scientific advances in the lab into real benefits for patients. Research in the centre focuses on cancers that are especially common in Scotland, such as endocrine (breast, prostate and ovarian); smoking related (lung, throat, oral) and gastrointestinal cancers. The facility will incorporate genomics, biomarkers, target validation, drug development, pathology and preclinical trials. The centre is named ‘The Wolfson Wohl Cancer Research Centre,’ in recognition of donations from The Wolfson Foundation and the Maurice Wohl Charitable Foundation which total £2.85million.
The Beatson Pebble Appeal fundraising campaign has reached a new milestone with donations topping £8 million of the £10 million target raised through over 1,900 individual donations to the University of Glasgow. However, with £2 million still to be raised the big challenge is to have the majority of these funds in place by the time the building opens.
