Gianluca gained his BSc degree in Biomedical engineering from the Magna Graecia University of Catanzaro in 2013 by defending his thesis on the subject of “Matlab recipes for understanding the flow of anaesthetics in patients during surgery”. In 2015 he received the degree of MSc in Materials Science and Engineering from King Abdullah University of Science and Technology in Saudi Arabia conducting research on the subject of “Nanofabrication of Surface Enhanced Raman Spectroscopy Substrates for Single/Few Molecules Detection”. On September 2015 Gianluca started his PhD degree at the University of Glasgow, under the Centre for Doctoral training in Intelligent Sensing and measurements programme, joining Theme 5 (Multimodality) of the Sonopill project.

Gianluca is working towards the miniaturization, optimization and testing of an optical block to be integrated in the Sonopill capsule, capable of performing autofluorescence and fluorescence-labelling imaging of the gastrointestinal tract. Gianluca’s research is supervised by Professor David Cumming (University of Glasgow), and Dr Mohammed Al-Rawhani (University of Glasgow).
