BOOK LAUNCH | THE SCOTTISH PRESS: PAST AND PRESENT

ABOUT THE PAPER

This paper looks at editors and journalists in the Scottish Press in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries and how they presented the news on key political issues, on social change, on religion, and on empire. It will consider how press attitudes contributed to a Scottish identity and how the growth of non-Scottish ownership in the twentieth century brought change.

ABOUT THE SPEAKER

Professor Hamish Fraser was formerly Professor of Modern History at University of Strathclyde, and is now an emeritus professor. He is the author of the recently published Edinburgh History of Scottish Newspapers 1850-1950 and is a long-standing professor at the University of York. He will hold a discussion with invited panelists, Brian Taylor, Political Editor of BBC Scotland, and David Clegg, Editor of The Courier.
