ABOUT THE PAPER
Flaming saints, vomiting fish and journeying Picts: how and why Scotland features in ‘The History of Ireland’s Notable Places’ (Dindshenchas Érenn)
Dindshenchas Érenn ‘The History of Ireland’s Notable Places’ is an extensive corpus of topographical stories focussed on places within Ireland itself. Our presentation will begin by discussing the nature of the corpus and how it functioned as a record of Ireland’s past. That history extended eastwards and Scottish characters and events also form part of the extended narrative. With reference to Colum Cille, Dr Marie-Luise Theuerkauf will present St Columba in Irish topography, with particular reference to Dindshenchas texts, while Dr David McCay will examine the development of the Dindshenchas of Mag Muirisce, in which the saint’s activity is a central compilatory focus. Having introduced the material, Prof. Máire Ní Mhaonaigh will bring the talk to a close by looking at incidental other references which relate to a Dindshenchas of Scotland.
