Our research has demonstrated that there is a big need for language learning among the migrant population but prospective language learners face a number of barriers of to accessing standard language courses, such as limited or unstable provision in their area, working hours, childcare issues or transport issues (SSAMIS Interim Report, February, 2016), and this is an especially acute problem in rural areas. Many learners need a much more flexible learning model than can be offered by means of traditional language courses.

In order to address this need for flexible language learning, SSAMIS' researcher Paulina Trevena is developing the idea of flexible, interactive English for Speakers of Other Languages (ESOL) course online. The idea is at an early stage of development but Paulina has been successful in applying for the first stage of the Converge Challenge competition and is hoping to secure funding towards its further development.
