‘Journeys’ Exhibition: Making Migrants’ Lives Visible

Journeys’ explores four crucial questions:

  • Why do people from other countries move to Scotland?
  • What would you say to welcome new people to Scotland?
  • What makes a place feel like home?
  • How can we make newcomers feel more at home in Scotland?

‌Migrants and migration are constantly in the news, yet the experiences and perspectives of migrants themselves remain little understood. The SSAMIS project prioritises this often hidden migrant voice in both its theoretical and empirical approach. In ‘Journeys’, migrants tell their own stories, and choose how they want to represent themselves and their life stories. The exhibition materials, including portraits, maps, a film, and a special collection of ‘objects from home’ that have been lent to the museum by project participants, were created during the Make It Happen Café in a collaboration between professional creative artists from Caged Beastie, Modo and community members from Peterhead, both people who are new to the area, as well as people who have lived here all their lives, exploring universal themes of everyday life, working to build a sense of community, and getting to know ourselves and our neighbours better.

The Arbuthnot Museum in Peterhead has an extensive record of the local whaling and fishing past, but little that reflects modern life in Peterhead. A strategic aim for Aberdeenshire Council Museums’ Service is to increase visitor numbers, and attract a more diverse audience. Our ambition is that ‘Journeys’, will engage with Peterhead’s diverse communities, and bring a new audience to the museum.
