Abstract

Wearable bioelectronic devices relying on oxidoreductase enzymes and have already demonstrated considerable promise for on-body applications ranging from selective non-invasive biomarker monitoring to epidermal energy harvesting and storage towards integrated power‐supply hybrid systems and self-powered (body-powered battery-free) health monitoring systems. Critical to such progress is the judicious design of the enzyme-electronic interface, along with flexible platforms with mechanical properties similar to those of biological tissues. Such wearable bioelectronic devices require special attention to the enzyme-electronic interface and to several considerations, such as flexibility and stretchability, operational stability in different biofluids, biofouling, selectivity, etc. This lecture will present a variety of such wearable bioelectronic devices developed in recent years. Such devices are expected to have a tremendous impact on diverse biomedical, fitness and defence fields.

Biography

Joseph Wang is Distinguished Professor & SAIC Endowed Chair in Dept. of Nanoengineering at UCSD. He is also the Director of UCSD Centre of Wearable Sensors & the Founding Editor of Electroanalysis. He served as the Chair of the Dept. of Nanoengineering (2014-2019) & as the Director of Centre for Bioelectronics at ASU (2004-2008). Prof. Wang has made pioneering contributions to electrochemical devices, biosensors, point-of-care diagnostics, printable electronics, nanobiotechnology & microrobots. Prof. Wang has published >1100 papers, 11 books & holds 30 patents. He is a highly cited researcher (ISI Thomson Reuters, 2014-2019) in Engineering & Chemistry (>120,000 citations; H Index = 170).

He has received several national ACS, ECS & SEAC Awards, 10 Honorary Professorships, & 3 Medals of honours from the UK, Australia & Czech Republic. He is a Fellow of the ECS, RSC & AIMBE.
