The principles, methods and theoretical approaches to Health Promotion / Improvement will be presented and studied in this course. The planning and evaluation of health promotion programmes at local, regional and national levels will serve as a particular focus.
This 10 week online course comprises 10 weekly lectures, each taking the form of two or three short lectures totalling around 90 minutes duration, and nine related weekly academic exercises. Exercises will each require around four notional hours of student effort and each week an academic staff member will convene an online tutorial related to these.

MED5024 Health Promotion: Principles And Practice
A 2,500 word essay on a particular health promotion topic will comprise 80% of the assessment and a portfolio of 1,000 words - the portfolio will be a reflective blog based on personal learning arising from weekly exercises where current policy, practice, and research is analysed - will comprise 20% of the assessment.

To introduce students to the theoretical approaches and practice of health promotion, including the planning and evaluation of health promotion programmes at local, regional and national levels.
Intended Learning Outcomes of Course
On completion of this course, students will be able to:
Compare and contrast the principles of health promotion, health education and health protection.
Critically discuss the philosophical and ethical backdrop of health promotion.
Evaluate the factors which influence population health and health promotion policy development.
Critically appraise a number of behaviour change models and relate them to public health practice.
Assess the evidence relating to several population health strategies.
Critically appraise the evidence base, value system, and practice of social marketing.
Analyse and evaluate the development of health promoting settings.
Critically discuss well established health promotion planning models.
Assess the key principles of effective evaluation and critically examine evaluation of health promotion practice with regard to these.
Minimum Requirement for Award of Credits
Students must submit at least 75% by weight of the components (including examinations) of the course's summative assessment.
