On this course students will address the role of the physical environment in determining health status and perpetuating inequalities in human health. Strategies for measuring and controlling environmental exposures for public health purposes will be studied.
Requirements of Entry
In one 3,000 word essay students will be required to identify and critically appraise the evidence (relating to biological response and epidemiology) linking an aspect of physical environment to health/wellbeing and to critically analyse the nature and appropriateness of the public health response.

Intended Learning Outcomes of Course
On successful completion of this course, student will be able to:
Analyse the development of environmental control as a public health measure with reference to the literature.
Critically evaluate a series of paradigms and conceptual models relevant to environmental health.
Examine the relationship between the changing nature of disease and environmental health practice.
Critically appraise the evidence base and information systems related to the promotion of health environments.
Critically analyse the legislative, administrative and institutional framework for environmental protection and environmental health.
Assess the particular challenges of communicating risk relating to environmental exposures and of developing an appropriate institutional response.
Evaluate the risks posed by the contaminants of importance and consider appropriate transport and control mechanisms for these in various environmental media.
Analyse and discuss the educational and political implications of current environmental issues.
Minimum Requirement for Award of Credits
Students must submit at least 75% by weight of the components (including examinations) of the course's summative assessment.
