During this course the student will learn how to recognise and support the major failing organ systems. The systems covered will include cardiovascular, respiratory, renal, hepatic, gastrointestinal, neurological and haematological. Emphasis will be placed on the interactions and competing challenges when dealing with more than one simultaneously failing organ system.

A variety of teaching methods will be scheduled during the week including lectures, tutorials, seminars, workshops and ward rounds.

Summative assessment will be carried out using 2 methods:

1. Written Assignment: The student will write an essay of approx. 2,500 words critically appraising the literature around an aspect of managing multi-organ failure (80%). ILO1, ILO2, ILO3

2. Poster Presentation: The students will create a poster on a topic related to managing multi-organ failure and produce a 5-min presentation of the poster (20%). ILO1, ILO3

The student will have knowledge of the signs and symptoms of failing major organ systems. They will be able to describe how to support these failing systems and in particular describe the challenges and interactions when more than one organ system fails simultaneously.

By the end of this course students will be able to:

1. Demonstrate a critical understanding of a range of key elements in relations to the management of patients with multi- organ failure.

2. Critically evaluate, analyse and synthesise the literature regarding the available equipment and clinical management strategies designed to support patients with multi-organ failure.

3. Eloquently express views and critical judgements grounded in the critical evaluation of the literature on issue related to the management of patients with multiorgan failure.

Students must submit at least 75% by weight of the components (including examinations) of the course's summative assessment.
