Research title: The Spatial Biology of Head and Neck Cancer Inequalities

Research summary

This research project is designed to investigate the socioeconomic gap seen in head and neck cancer, particularly oropharyngeal cancers (of the tonsils, base of tongue and/or soft palate). In Scotland, Oropharynx cancer patients in deprived cohorts are nearly 2.5 times more likely to die from head and neck cancers.

This project sets out to determine if there is a hidden, biologically plausible explanation for this inequal socioeconomic mortality difference. This will be done by interrogating cancer mechanisms and the tumour microenvironment using epidemiology and spatial omics. This project will hopefully lead to more personalised care of underserved populations.
