Virtual Exchange Opportunities are mobilities with international partners that students can participate in from the comfort of their own home. Virtual exchange opportunities are excellent for students that can't engage with an in person, as well as for any student hoping to develop their skills with a unique opportunity.
Internships, language workshops, simulations, hackathons, cultural immersion programmes and Micro Internships are all consiered Virtual exchanges. So long as there is an international partner involved in the development of the programme, it can be considered as a Virtual Exchange Opportunity.
International partners can include:
- University Exchange Partners
- CIVIS and U21 Network Partners
- Third Party Providers
- International Companies
Benefits of Virtual Exchange Opportunities
Virtual exchanges will provide you the opportunity to develop and demonstrate transferable skills and competencies that are considered desirable by most employers. This project will provide numerous occasions where you can:
- work with people across different cultures and disciplines, building trust and demonstrating respect for different cultures
- work independently demonstrating your ability to organise and manage your own work
- research and think creatively, demonstrating your ability to critically analyse data and find solutions
- develop effective communication skills, and demonstrate you can work with others
Employers continue to emphasise the need for graduates to have transferable skills, and the ability to demonstrate these skills through project work can improve your employability.
Think Pacific Remote Internships
Remote internships are an excellent opportunity to work internationally, whilst continuing your studies in Glasgow. Remote internships are a valuable experience which may help ease you into the idea of engaging with a physical internship abroad as well as provide you with work experience. The global job market will always have a digital element, so being prepared to work remotely through internships will provide an advantage.
Think Pacific frequently offers remote internships to University students across the year. Think Pacific is a registered Fijian Charity and UK social enterprise with over 15 years’ experience supporting Fijian Government Ministries, NGOs, local enterprises and business partners to achieve ethical, responsible and sustainable development, whilst allowing students to have a self-developing and rewarding experience.
The Remote Fiji Internship program means students can contribute to international sustainable development and gain unique practical experience, whilst working from home. This internship supports the achievement of the Fiji National Development Plan; a 20-Year Development Plan with the vision of “Transforming Fiji” towards an even more progressive, vibrant and inclusive society. Working on behalf of a Fijian organization (across a choice of 10 sectors), interns complete a ‘Social Action Project’ that tackles real problems in the South Pacific, whilst learning about the fascinating Fijian culture and developing global citizenship. These in-demand internships are hugely beneficial, flexible and fully customized to meet your career goals and academic requirements.
The short-term-mobility team actively works with Think Pacific to deliver funded internships throughout the year. To keep informed about any remote internships, please sign up to the STM Moodle for further updates.

COIL- Collaborative Online International Learning
What is COIL?
Collaborative Online International learning is a form of virtual exchange, allowing students from different countries to use digital technology to collaborate on a meaningful project relevant to their studies. COIL projects can typically be found within the schools and colleges, engaging with a wider range of international partners.
Benefits of COIL
Intercultural learning through COIL also allows students to learn about, from, and with another culture that they may have never previously been exposed to. COIL can build common understanding across diverse communities and groups, and also provides a space for experiential learning. COIL can contribute to foster international orientation, cross-cultural sensitivity, open-mindedness, second language competence, flexibility of thinking, as well as respect for others.
COIL activities enable more students to take advantage of international collaborative learning opportunities, while balancing wider academic, professional, and personal commitments that may make physical mobility difficult or unrealistic.
