One of the pledges within the University of Glasgow's current Technician Commitment Action Plan is to increase transparency around career development pathways and celebrate the achievements of our technical workforce.
We are delighted to share the latest career progression data covering 1 March 2024 to 1 July 2026, highlighting significant successes across the Technical & Specialist (T&S) job family.
Headline Findings
-
High Success Rate: Out of 55 total applications, 50 staff successfully progressed, achieving an outstanding 90.9% success rate.
-
Wide Range of Grades: Progression outcomes spanned Grades 4 through 8, with Grade 7 representing the largest single category (19 applications / 34.5%).
-
Equitable Gender Participation: Participation was near-equally balanced between 28 male applicants (50.9%) and 27 female applicants (49.1%), with both groups achieving exceptionally high success rates (92.6% for female applicants and 89.3% for male applicants).
-

Understanding Workforce Reach & Progression Routes
As of September 2026, the University employs 701 Technical & Specialist staff. The 55 applications processed during this reporting window represent approximately 7.8% of the overall T&S workforce actively participating in formal progression mechanisms.
Note on Scope:
These statistics solely capture outcomes from formal regrading submissions (accounting for 96.4% of applications) and the designated Internal Progression route. Staff who advanced their careers through standard competitive internal job recruitment are not included in this dataset, meaning total career mobility across our technical community is even broader.
Looking Ahead
Behind each of these 50 successful outcomes is a colleague whose technical expertise, innovation, leadership, and dedication directly contribute to the University's world-class research, teaching, and infrastructure. The Technician Commitment Steering Group will continue working across all Colleges and Services to support colleagues at every stage of their career journey.
Congratulations to all 50 colleagues on their well-deserved progression!
